Islam, Iman and Ihsan, The Journey of the Heart
بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْم
In the beautiful Hadith of Jibril عليه السلام, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked about the very foundations of our journey towards Allah. He ﷺ spoke of Islam, Īmān, and Iḥsān three dimensions of a life devoted to our Creator.
Islam is to surrender ourselves to Allah to bow our bodies in prayer, to fast, to give, and to live according to His guidance.
Iman is to fill the heart with certainty to believe in Allah, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and His divine decree.ﷺ
And then comes Iḥsan the beauty of the journey:
“To worship Allah as though you see Him, and if you cannot see Him, then indeed He sees you.” Hadith of Jibril ﷺ
