Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya Al-Kandhlawi Al-Madani رحمه الله was one of the distinguished scholars of Ḥadīth of the twentieth century, whose life was devoted to the Qur’ān, Sunnah, knowledge, worship, and spiritual reform. His scholarship and writings have continued to benefit Muslims across the world.
He was particularly renowned for his deep engagement with the science of Ḥadith and for his teaching and writings. Among his celebrated works are Awjaz al-Masalik, a detailed commentary on the Muwaṭṭa of Imam Malik, and Fada’il A,mal, through which generations of Muslims have been encouraged towards Salah, Zikr, Qur’an, good character, and the practical implementation of Islam.
Yet beyond his academic accomplishments, the enduring legacy of Mawlana Muhammad Zakariyya رحمه الله lies in the profound connection he established between knowledge and action. He was among the foremost Mashāikh of Tazkiyah and Sulūk of his time.
Particularly during the later years of his life, after moving to Madinah Al-Munawwarah, he devoted himself wholeheartedly to Tazkiyah wa-Suluk, just as he had dedicated his earlier years to the pursuit of knowledge, teaching, and writing. He travelled extensively to different parts of the world, including South Africa, Pakistan, and England, establishing gatherings of Tazkiyah and Suluk and encouraging people to transform the teachings of Islam from the pages of books into their hearts, character, and daily lives.
He continuously urged both the public and the Ulama to preserve and carry forward the noble legacy of the Prophet ﷺ and his successors, passing these teachings on to the generations that would follow.
His remarkable journey ultimately brought him to Madinah al-Munawwarah, where he spent the last 12 years of his life. It was there that he passed away and was laid to rest in Jannat al-Baqi.
